Oblivion, Hit or Miss? Also starring Wall-E

Oblivion is Tom Cruise‘s newest Action/Sci-Fi movie to hit theaters in April. The visuals look spectacular but that alone isn’t enough to bring in an audience. Oblivion is based on the Radical Comics graphic novel with the same name. Not surprisingly The graphic novel is written by the director of the movie, Joseph Kosinski. Kosinski’s previous movie, which also is one of my favorite movies, was Tron: Legacy. Not a fantastic movie in the sense of the story but the visuals were stunning. I think we can expect to see the same from Kosinski in Oblivion.

Fun fact about Kosinski: Tron: Legacy was his directorial debut. Kosinski had previously worked on commercials for Halo 3 (‘Starry Night’) and Gears of War (‘Mad World’).

Here’s the official synopsis of the film:

Tom Cruise stars in Oblivion, an original and groundbreaking cinematic event from the director of TRON: Legacy and the producer of Rise of the Planet of the Apes. On a spectacular future Earth that has evolved beyond recognition, one man’s confrontation with the past will lead him on a journey of redemption and discovery as he battles to save mankind.

Jack Harper (Cruise) is one of the last few drone repairmen stationed on Earth. Part of a massive operation to extract vital resources after decades of war with a terrifying threat known as the Scavs, Jack’s mission is nearly complete.

Living in and patrolling the breathtaking skies from thousands of feet above, his soaring existence is brought crashing down when he rescues a beautiful stranger from a downed spacecraft. Her arrival triggers a chain of events that forces him to question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

Oblivion was shot in stunning digital 4K resolution on location across the United States and Iceland.

The movie looks stunning, beautiful and the story doesn’t seem too bad. I’d love to see Cruise return to his former badass self instead of the Scientology/couch jumping persona he’s taken on. Morgan Freeman looks RIDICULOUS in the movie but I can honestly watch Freeman in any movie. As long as he talks, I’ll be there.

The soundtrack for Oblivion will be scored by M83 and it sounds AMAZING! There are a few samples out on the internet if you want to take a listen. Kosinski is amazing in mixing in electronic music into his movies. Need an example? Check out Tron: Legacy and listen to the score by Daft Punk. No one can deny the collaboration was perfect. I’m thinking that the same is going to for M83 and Oblivion.

This movie also weirdly reminds me of Wall-E. (Speaking of which, check out the Wall-E/Oblivion mash-up trailer below)

The movie is set to come out April 19, 2013. It also stars Andrea Riseborough (Victoria), Olga Kurylenko (Julia) and Nikolaj Coster-Waldau (Sykes). The movie is directed, co-produced and co-written by Joseph Kosinski.
